In Chapter One we are introduced to Cody Gallas and his tragic childhood. Please write a brief response summarizing the way all of this suffering made you feel. Also what is the foreshadowing at the end of chapter 1? What powers might Cody posses?

Sorrow and despondency were the only words that conjured up in my mind after acknowledging the catastrophic events that Cody encountered during his childhood. While perusing, I certainly empathize Cody's feelings; how it feels like to lose someone we truly love and how it feels like to witness someone we care very much for perish away before our own eyes. Cody's life seems to be very normal like all typical American teen until the day his mother is assaulted by four lustful thugs. Cody's mother should have drove to somewhere safe. She knew that where they stopped at is a "...neighborhood that does not look safe...". If she were to find a safer place to park and make a call, Cody would not have to go through all these calamitous events. I feel extremely sorry for Cody to have such an imbecile mother but still lovingly. I nearly break out into tears when the policemen were trying to separate Cody and his mother. It is the most heart-breaking scene ever. Even though, the lifeless body of his mother lay on top of Cody, both of them wanted to hold on to together forever. Towards the end of chapter 1, Cody dreamed about his dad committing a suicide because his wife has been raped and killed. This foreshadows that at some point in time, his dad will die. Cody might possess the ability to foresee the future through dreaming or else he would not be telling the nurse that his father died after dreaming about it. Cody certainly has clairvoyance.

Cody lived a normal childhood until his mom has been raped and killed. What touched me is the fact that Cody step out into the street and try to help his mom. "He kept screaming. holding the letter "o" for so long that his entire body began trembling-his voice cracking-until his lungs couldn't support him with anymore oxygen and he felt face-first onto the concrete, unconscious". This line is so dramatic and sad. He can't do anything but scream until he couldn't anymore. This make Cody normal voice change in to a baritone voice. Cody voice could never be the same. It's tough that his mom and dad died when he is 6 years old. The last part of the story shown that he have future sight, and knows what is happening. Somehow Cody's dad and Cody's mind is connected. This make his know that his father is dead.

I really sympathized Cody for all the sorrow and grief that Cody felt in Chapter 1. He had to lose two of his most loved person on the planet, his parents. Also, he was in the situation, witnessing the death of his mother. It must have been a tragedy, seeing the one he loves passed away before his own eyes. Also, he probably regretted that he should find a way to help his mom but he didn’t know now. I really felt sorry for what happened to Cody. He wanted to hold on to his mother but he couldn’t. He was in a helpless situation. As mentioned on page 10, “Cody wanted to hold on to her. Why couldn’t they leave her with him, holding him? “ He must have been very depressed. It was as if everything had fallen apart. It happened so unexpectedly. Also, what was more tragic was that his father committed suicide right after. Cody must have been clueless of what to do with his life. He must have been grief-stricken, heart-broken and lonely. The ending of this chapter also foreshadows the power that Cody might possess. He must have some kind of telepathic communication that he wasn’t aware of. He knew that his father commit suicide in his dreams even though he wasn’t even in the situation.

Cody has faced the terrific end of his beloved mother. She was raped and beaten to death in front of him while he watched and unable to do anything. Survivor guild has hunted him, change his life. If you know the feeling when are unable to save someone you, you know that is suffer and you feel the guild. The guild ruin Cody life but the worse to come is, it may end his father's life. For his father who love his wife's purity more than anything else, she being raped is even worse than she being killed. He may or may not stand this catastrophic tragedy. Cody's dream may forecast the terrific end of his father

The situation Cody suffers is not an easy situation where everyone, like us can understand. The rape and murder scene of his own mother in front of his own eyes wouldn't be bearable to me nor anyone else. Cody should't have ever imagined about this scene happening to him. Before, his life was so ordinary and he actually thinks that 'his mother always got turned around while driving..'. I actually don't really know how I feel for Cody except to be sorry for him that he faces such an adverse situation in his youth. At the end of the story, the context 'Cody's voice would never be the same' and When people hear his voice... as if he was possesed', imply that his life will never be the same and that it won't become brighter and more prosperous. He might posses the power to foresee or pre-see with his dream.

Cody had suffered through a tragedy during his childhood life at the age of 14. Cody saw that his mother was tortured and killed by a group of men while trying to make a phone call with the father. Nobody could ever restrain yourself if they were to be placed in this kind of situation. I sincerely condoled Cody for what had happened to him . He must be panic seeing the death of his mother by his own eyes. The worst part of it was that he could do nothing but stared at this unforgettable murder. Not only that, Cody suffered twice the pain when he was able to predicted the upcoming death of his father by dreaming. That his father had committed a suicide because he couldn't stand the truth that his wife was now dead. This means that Cody was now being left alone with a scar on his heart. I couldn't imagine how painful it would be to wake up in the hospital with those kind of memory. There will be consequences that go beyond the death of the loved ones. Especially at this young age, it will totally changes the child. It will changes his personality, belief , fear, and his perspectives.

I pity for Cody and certainly sympathized for his feelings because he suffered a lot from losing his parents which was cruel to a life of a young boy. Cody witnessed the death of his mother by his own eyes. His mom died because she was raped by four thugs and he can't even help her. Cody must have been in a melancholy for sure. The end of chapter 1, Cody dreamed about his dad committing a suicide because of the death of Cody's mom even though he wasn’t even in the situation. His dad might be lonely and has no more hope, that's why he kill himself. It also foreshadows the power that Cody might possess. Cody might have some power of telepathic communication and that his life would not be the same anymore.

After I finished reading the first chapter I felt like I was hit by a baseball bat. I didn't expect all of these horrible things would happen to this little boy Cody. It would feel like your heart had been torn out when you saw your mother got raped and killed by those vicious thugs while you could't do anything to save her at all. I felt terrified when there was a scene where the police was trying to separate Cody and his mother apart. His mother was holding on so tight to him. This really showed how much she loved him and wanted to protect him. However, everything got even worst when Cody knew that his dad had commit suicide after his mother was dead. Toward the end of the chapter Cody dreamed of his father death. After he woke up he was so sure that his father was dead. This foreshadow that maybe he had an ability to foresee something others couldn't. Maybe there was someone possessing his mind and telling him what was going on.

I couldn't imagine how would I feel if I were Cody, a little boy who faced so many horrible things at a very young age . I felt terrified and pity for Cody when he saw the death of his mother by his own eyes and he couldn't do anything about it . At the end of chapter1,everything got worst. Cody dreamed that his father had committed a suicide because he love his wife so much and he couldn't except the truth that she's death . Cody suffered a lot from the death of his parents . Cody has future sight through dreaming . He knows what is going to happen.

Compared to other kids, Cody had a pretty tough childhood. His entire world collapsed at the age of 6. His mother got raped and murdered by thugs and his father committed suicide follow. Even worse, he saw every detail of their deaths; the moment it was happening , but could not prevent it. This tragedy truly made me feel sorry for him. It’s not easy for a young naive child to bear such heart breaking pain. However, despite these immense sufferings, I believe that a stronger Cody will emerge as the ending hints “ From that day, he spoke in a tone one octave below a bullhorn. When people heard his baritone voice coming from his tiny body, it often made them feel uncomfortable, as it he was possessed.” Saying someone is possessed means their occupying soul is supernatural, so from past incidents, I think Cody possesses the power of telepathy. He could foresee everything by reading thoughts and visit places just by picturing it. - Pimpisa

Chapter 1 was actually introducing all the main characters in this story. The opening scene showed us that Cody was an orphan. His mother was raped and then she died. At that time Cody was so young so he could not do anything to help his mother but he still did something that a man could do. He stood up against them, told them to stop but it didn’t work. No one seemed to care or notice that he was there and finally he fell onto the concrete. I really commiserated with what Cody faced in this chapter and the scene where the police tried to separate Cody and his mom was so touching. It showed how much his mother love him. The situation was thought to be better however it’s getting worse because he had some kind of power which he could see the future and the past as well so he knew that his father actually died too. He couldn’t bear the truth that his wife was raped and she never got to be clean before she died. So his father shot himself and left Cody as an orphan.

Cody, a boy who had been put in such a tragic moment since his childhood. While I was reading the story something came up in my mind " How can a person's life be so short.", that was what I was thinking. I couldn't really imagine myself being in that situation. It was pretty harsh for a 6 year old boy to wake up from his dream and knew that his mother was raped and killed while his father was dead also. While reading the first chapter I could felt the sadness, sorrow, and depression in Cody's mind. I sympathized with what Cody had faced in this chapter and I think that there maybe some more sad scenes during the story as well. After reading the first chapter , I knew that Cody had some kind of special power and I think that this power will surely play a big role in the story.

Every unexpected things happened in chapter one. I was shocked and felt sorry while reading this chapter. Cody had suffered because he have been turned from a normal kid into an orphan. His mother got raped and killed then his dad committed suicide. He was just a little kid who had to faced all this problems with himself. And that he was too young to solved this problem alone. I can feel how depressed he could be when he got separated from his mother and when his father talks about his mother's dead in his dream. Even though it was just a dream but it is interesting that he could know the future or what happened in his dream. This maybe foreshadowing that he would have some kind of power that he could see the past or the future. and the situation would be better from now on.

I really feel sorry for him because of his childhood where he lost his mother when he's still young. Children needs love when they're young to show how will they be in the future. This can mean that he will be psychologically sad all the time when he sees that other kids got parents. But in order for that feeling to fade away he needs to find like a foster home to repair and rebuild his emotions. This foreshadows that he might lose someone in the future whether its his grandmother or his father or even his friends. Pol
